Remember, getting the itch where it’s been shaved is ordinary: your woman’s area will be extra sensitive while your hormones are all over the place! I say this because that’s one of the most common problems women have when they shave their pubic areas; some even get rashes due to irritation.
So before you start, ask yourself, do you cringe at the thought of a bit of wax pain? If so, think about trimming first, or find someone you trust to get rid of hairs for you who has the experience and always uses fresh new sticks/strips.
Suppose you didn’t leave enough hair for regular shaving to be comfortable. In that case, Mary Lupo, a board-certified dermatologist at the Lupo Center for Aesthetic & General Dermatology in New Orleans, generally recommends waiting until after delivery.
While waxing is reported as reasonably safe during pregnancy, and the shooting pains often associated with getting it done shouldn’t be too problematic since they are not typical of labour pains, razors remain a somewhat safer shaving alternative.
Bottom line: If the pain involved isn’t enough to create severe concern or warrants going old school by simply grabbing that razor instead, go right ahead!
Use an arm extender:
If you’re still determined to do it yourself and your contortionist moves are no longer working out for you, one solution is to invest in a razor extender. They make these devices so that you can shave without bending down.
Try a cream:
Many pregnant women experience unwanted hair growth, but waxing is an easy (albeit temporary) fix that removes all hair instantly. But remember that a good, clean wax only professional massages while being careful not to rip the skin off; when too cold, it can be easy to pull and hurt your skin.
So the best place to get a wax done is typically in salons – they have experts working there, and most should do a great job applying the hot wax expertly to your skin without causing any problems other than some redness afterwards.
Have your husband help:
I believe enlisting your partner (or anyone you trust) as the second pair of eyes can be another viable option. While they may not be an expert groomer, your spouse could have steady hands, making the task easier to accomplish and much more comfortable for you.
If this sounds too technical, it’s the perfect opportunity for couples to master the art of shared responsibility.
Let your partner help with shaving! The postpartum experience is a crazy and challenging time for any couple, but it’s especially so for growing families. This doesn’t mean you have to throw the idea of romance out the window, though.
While our advice to let strangers wax you and your OB do regular check-ups seems odd, and while allowing him to help shave won’t necessarily appear anywhere near as awkward as that, it’s important not to lose sight of what matters most during this time – to love each other through all bumps in the road.
Skip it altogether!
That’s right, and you can skip shaving during your treatments! Just know that some doctors might prefer patients to be hair-free (it might not hurt to ask at the front desk before removing all of it). Relax and focus on healing if you’re comfortable with it. Your health should avoid double-dipping the razor within two weeks.
Ask in a large Facebook group of moms, and if you’re fortunate, you might hear an answer along the foles… skip it!
If you’re a first-time mom, you should know one thing: it’s incredibly challenging to maintain your grooming habits. Yeah, that part probably won’t bother you as much as figuring out how to take care of your baby or spending a few hours just trying to get any sleep.
About alternative methods like laser removal?
I haven’t been able to find anything about the safety of laser hair removal during pregnancy. The only places willing to do it are too cautious about trying this kind of treatment on pregnant women because it wouldn’t be ethical.
I once had Lasik eye surgery, and the process was excruciating. The previous results did not last either.
